Juneteenth celebrates the ending of slavery in the United States. While the emancipation proclamation was signed in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln, enforcement of the proclamation relied upon Union troops. On June 19, 1865, two months after the civil war ended, enslaved African Americans in Texas were informed by the Union Army that they were free.
